The Climate Risk Certificate is put on hold in 2026 due to changes in purchase processing systems at the SOA. No additional course or bundle purchases are possible at this time. The SOA apologizes for any inconvenience this might cause.
Open to Both Actuaries and Non-Actuaries
This new SOA certificate program in Climate Risk features in-depth content from interdisciplinary experts, real-world case studies and stories, interactive activities, recommended reading, and pre-recorded seminars of additional content. It is a comprehensive self-paced professional certificate program, providing approximately 75 hours of content on climate risk management and the measurement of climate risk impacts. It is designed for actuaries in all practice areas and is modularized to provide options for those searching for a fundamental introduction and others who are looking to delve deeply into applications.
Participants have the option to take individual courses such as “Climate Risk Fundamentals” as a standalone course. The first two courses cover the fundamentals of climate risk, serve as an introduction to the remaining courses, and are recommended for anyone interested in learning about the subject.
Below outlines a brief description of the courses:
- Course 1 – Climate Risk Fundamentals: Definitions, ways to look at data, weather extremes, the Actuaries Climate Index, role of CO2 and greenhouse gas effects, economic and insured losses.
- Course 2 – Climate Risk Data Sources: Data collection, worldwide sources, SOA tools, considerations, pitfalls, and capacity constraints.
- Course 3 – Climate Risk Modeling: Use of past trends and recent observations, modeling of catastrophic events (e.g., tornado, hurricane, flood), forecasting extreme events, uncertainty in forecasts.
- Course 4 – Actuarial Risk Analysis: Associating risk with loss variables, risk management, impact of adaptations and insurability, role of decarbonization.
- Course 5 – Specialized Education: Candidates have a choice of applying the previous material to a specific practice area and select one area pertaining to their primary focus, including:
- Life Insurance
- Health Insurance
- Pensions
- General Insurance
- Investment/Finance
- Course 6 – Climate Risk Governance and Strategy: Transition risks, public and private approaches, regulation, affordability of insurance coverages.
Full Certificate Program Options Available
The full Climate Risk Certificate Program is recommended for actuaries and other professionals who want practical instruction and training about the complex challenges of climate risk. It is specifically designed for individuals who work in the fields of life, health or general insurance, pensions, finance and investments or other professional industries.
The full certificate pairs the risk management acumen of actuaries with the interdisciplinary expertise necessary to manage the complexity of climate risk. Complete five required courses, select one course between 103-107 as seen in the Program Registration Tab related to your area of focus, and pass an assessment, to receive the Climate Risk Certificate. Each course is a self-paced e-learning module containing approximately 10 hours of content, including interactive activities and knowledge checks. The full certificate program includes a seminar of pre-recorded additional content.
