The SOA Board of Directors met June 27-28 in Washington, D.C. to discuss strategic priorities and opportunities that will help shape the future of the profession and support our global membership. Highlights included discussions on global strategy, artificial intelligence and the evolution of our ASA pathway. The Board also approved proposed Bylaws changes based on member feedback, which will be brought to membership for a vote during the 2026 Board elections.
Global Strategy: The Board reviewed progress on the SOA's global strategy, including initiatives to strengthen university partnerships, expand candidate growth efforts, develop new regional collaborations and enhance educational pathways. Discussion also explored opportunities and risks across key international markets, helping inform a differentiated strategy that balances growth, competition, affordability, and regional market needs.
Artificial Intelligence: An update was shared on the SOA’s evolving AI strategy, including progress toward integrating AI into education, strengthening AI-related research and professional development, and building organizational capabilities to support responsible adoption. The Board also continued to explore how the SOA can position itself and the actuarial profession for long-term success in an AI-driven environment.
Evolution of the ASA Pathway: Following the job task survey conducted with members in March, the Task Force presented its recommendations to optimize the ASA pathway. Based on the findings, the proposal is designed to better reflect the current work environment for new ASAs to enhance practical application, incorporate AI and other emerging technologies, and streamline the pathway. The Board approved the next phase of work, which includes conducting market research with key stakeholders and assessing the potential impact of the proposed changes on universities and candidates.
SOA Bylaws Member Vote: Based on member feedback and insights from the 2025 Bylaws vote, the Board approved presenting proposed SOA Bylaws changes to Fellows during the September 2026 Board election. These proposals include reducing the size of the Board from 18 members to 12, expanding Board eligibility to ASAs with at least 10 years of membership, and separating the roles of Board Chair and President. If approved, Board eligibility for ASAs would include a two-year waiting period following their final exam sitting. Fellows will vote on each of these proposed changes individually.
